Alexandra taught Envd 1052, Design and Communication I, during the fall of 2017. She taught two studio sections, each with about 16-18 students. Two of her students, Kylie Bromley and Narda Rodriguez, were selected to display final design intervention projects at the ENVD gallery and received Design Excellence awards. Representing the freshman 1052 course that semester, Kylie and Narda were two of the four students recognized for the entire freshman class.
About the Course
The Design and Communication I studio, otherwise known as Envd 1052, is an introductory studio for all Environmental Design Students. As the first design studio taken, predominantly by freshman, this course introduces many topics covering fundamental design principles and conceptual thinking through an iterative design process. The studio focused on all disciplines of environmental design including architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and city planning. Through a variety of projects, the final design project included a site on Pearl Street, downtown Boulder, Colorado with design issues concerning architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning. Many of the student projects shown below include, but are not excluded to, the final design intervention.
Taxonomy (shown above)
The taxonomy project was a preliminary study conceptually and visually representing the site through a series of photographs. Organized in an intentional way, each student composed a single presentation board.

Final Design Intervention (shown above)
The final design intervention was a synthesis of several projects completed throughout the semester. As the first studio project with a given site, students were challenged to not only think about site factors that may effect their design but were intended to think about the design concept. Are they going to create a social shift, alter the ecology of the site, or affect the way users circulate on Pearl Street? Incorporating skills such as orthographic drawing, site research, and modeling with an understanding of the iterative design process and concept to create a project, each student presented their final design intervention in front of a panel jury at the end of the semester.

Infographic Assignment (shown above)
The infographic assignment was primarily a short exercise to both research, synthesize, and visually communicate site analysis research. With the intent to teach students how site analysis and research can inform design, each student was given the chance to compile various aspects of the site.

Portfolio Assignment (shown above)
The portfolio assignment was a quick overview of how to put a portfolio together in design school. Students were required to think about composition and 2d organizational principles in addition to making a physical portfolio. Using a handful of projects from the semester, students composed portfolio books ranging in size, scale, and craft.
